If you have a complicated relationship with email — or no relationship with it at all — you are in the right place.
This episode is for the established business owner who knows email matters, has tried to make it work, and is still waiting for it to feel the way they want it to feel.
The good news: the friction is information. And information gives us somewhere to start.
In this episode, Breanna gets into the most common sticking points she hears from experienced business owners around email — not knowing what to write, feeling like it takes forever, not wanting to sell, and sending emails without seeing the results they expected. Each one points to something specific. Each one is solvable.
You will also get a reality check on email metrics — what open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates actually mean, what good numbers look like, and how to know whether your emails or your landing page need the closer look.
Human Design is the thread running through all of it. Because when you know how you are wired to communicate, the guesswork comes out of the equation — and email starts to feel like something you can actually want to show up for.
Here’s what we get into:
Why the people who struggle most with email are almost never beginners
What to do when you don’t know what to write
Why taking forever to write an email is almost always an alignment signal
What selling through email looks like when it fits how you’re designed
How to set expectations around email metrics that actually serve you
What Human Design shows us about where the friction is coming from

I’ll cover questions like:
- How do I make my emails sound more like me?

- Why are my emails not converting even when I’m doing everything right?
- What email sequences and funnels does my business need?
- How do I build an email list and keep my audience engaged?
- What does selling in email look like when it’s aligned?
- How can I stop marketing like everyone else and start showing up as myself?
- What does Human Design change about how I sell and communicate?
Blending in doesn’t do you any favors. Especially when you have the opportunity to build a marketing system that sounds like you, sells for you, and scales with you.
A month ago, I wasn’t sure if Own Your Mark was really going to happen. And here we are, getting ready to dig into our sixth episode together. ⁓ we have covered a lot of ground in the first five episodes. A little bit about energy types and profile lines, the mindset behind selling, the difference between the best email strategy versus your best email marketing strategy. So much.
good stuff already and we are just getting started. Because energy matters when you write emails. I have said some aversion of that line in every single episode so far. So if you’ve been here from the beginning, that’s at least five, if not 10 or more times by now. We are firmly established in that check, check, check, checkity, check. Now, what do we do with that information?
Especially if your energy around email is somewhere between existential dread and CIA level avoidance. Like what then? That’s what we’re gonna get into today.
Now I was toying with talking about this soon anyway, and then earlier this week, I got to work with a client who came to me and acknowledged that they have many negative beliefs around email.
I don’t write compelling emails. I don’t get results from emails. I don’t love being in my inbox. And I want to change that, they said. They understood the benefit of an email list for their business. I mean, when was the last time you purchased through emails? I purchased through emails all the time. Like we know that email works. Email is an $11 billion industry, I will remind you. Like we have 11 billion reasons
to prove that email marketing works. And so we know that email marketing works. And this client said, like, I’m ready to change this. I don’t want these limiting beliefs to be my story moving forward, which big hugs to them and big hugs to you if you feel that same way too. I’ve been in business for 16 years now. I am well aware
that there is no shortage of ideas or tactics, strategies, frameworks, et cetera, for your business, especially email. There will always be more things that you can learn and know and add. We collect them. It’s like Pokemons. We gotta collect them all, right? Think of a refrigerator. You can keep adding things to your fridge, but at some point,
Even if it’s a big industrial-sized fridge, you gotta clear out the old stinky stuff that never got used and sat there way too long. So it moved well past that yummy snack stage and straight into scary science project territory. So we gotta clean out your fridge or whatever it is that you store your email marketing ideas. Pull out those things that were good once upon a time, but
That time ain’t now. The things that have grown into fuzzy, yeah, buts, stinking up this metaphorical fridge so that we can create space for the yummy deliciousness that you can actually use and eat and will serve you well. And now I am very hungry. I don’t know about you. So I want to establish that if you don’t love email or if you have a more complicated
going on with email marketing. That’s okay. It’s okay if you don’t love it, if you think it’s hard, or just the thought of email marketing makes you want to use all of the bad words. It’s okay if you’re complacent and meh about emailing your business. I’m so glad you’re here. I’m like honored and are willing to spend time with me.
I frequently notice how the people who struggle most with email are not beginners in business. They’re not. They are established, experienced business owners who have been doing this for years, and yet something about email just isn’t clicking the way they want it to. This is actually really important information because if you have been in business long enough to know what you’re doing and there’s some friction
with sending emails, growing your email list, managing an email marketing strategy, that tells me that there is something out of alignment with you. And it gives us a starting point for clearing out the old to make space for the new. So I wanna ask you something and I want you to like really think about this and sit with it for a second, okay? Genuinely, I’m curious. What don’t you love about email?
What is the thing that makes you put it off or avoid it or quietly resent it? Even especially when you know that email matters. Now, we know that roughly 70 % of the population are sacral types, generators and manifesting generators. And sacral energy does not love an open-ended question with like nothing to grab onto.
Let me give you some things that I hear from established business owners who have a love-hate relationship with email. And you can kind of take note of which ones feel familiar for you. I hear often things like, I just don’t know what to write. I’m not a good writer. It takes me forever to write an email. I know I should be doing email marketing. And when I…
Don’t send emails to my list, I feel bad about it. And I’d rather just blame email than have to like acknowledge and sit in those feelings for too long. I don’t like to sell. Even when I do send emails, I’m not getting the results that I expected, like the clicks or the replies and the sales. So quick pulse check, does any of that ring true for you? Maybe multiple things.
Maybe all of the above. Maybe it got you thinking and your gripe with email, your sticking point is something I didn’t need. If you need a minute to like get it out and brain dump, think, process, go right ahead, please do so. Pause this episode if you need to. I’ll wait for you. I’ll be here when you’re ready. Whatever it is, I want you to know this. I am not surprised. I am not.
offended, like not even a little bit. And also, I’m not worried. I have heard every version of this from people who are really good at their work, at every stage, size, and scale of business. And every single client I have worked with, every single time I’ve heard this, there is something very specific underneath it that
is worth digging into and understanding. So let’s look at what some of those things might be. Because yeah, we have brought the hard stuff to the surface. Like we have opened up the Tupperware of well past expired was once edible, but now is just trash. We’ve opened that up and now we’re not just gonna leave it out or put it back in.
Okay, so we gotta do something about it. So maybe for you it’s, I don’t know what to write. Okay, forget about email for a second. What do you like? What do you like about your business? What brings you joy or satisfaction or success with your clients? What is happening in your business or your life? Use that as a jumping off point. Another approach, what kind of content do you like to create?
Do you enjoy videos and reels? Do you love hanging out on threads? Can you just pour it out into a blog post or some other type of long form content? What does come easily to you? And then can you just use that and turn it into an email? If you’re already writing blogs, can you just use those as emails? If you are creating a podcast,
There you go. Turn that into an email. And the other thing is you can flip it and you can use your emails to point people to the other types of content that you do love to create, especially like your Instagram reels or your LinkedIn messages or your threads. Like you can point people that way. Email does not have to carry the whole weight of your email content strategy and nor
Even better, your email marketing strategy doesn’t have to be its own separate entity. Now, if you fall into the feeling personally victimized by a blank doc and a blinking cursor cam, let’s talk about that. Is it possible that you are putting pressure on yourself to edit your thoughts as you draft? Like, it’s technically your first draft, but you are trying to
write and create as though it’s your final draft. Like, ooh, that feels hard. Just thinking about it like feels hard to me. And so let’s give you a new agenda, a new objective here. Your new assignment is how crappy of a version can you get out? Like how bad can you make your email draft? The delete button exists for a reason, okay? We can use it.
liberally as needed, but like later. First, we need something to actually delete. And if you’re like, okay, fine, but I still just don’t know where to start, try talking it out. Send yourself a voice note, send a voice note to a friend, use the speech to text apps to just get the words out and get the ideas flowing. Again, we can clean it up later.
Or just don’t clean it up at all. Send the video, link the voice note. Your email doesn’t have to be perfect or polished. Again, your email is just the vehicle. It is not the destination. The point of sending the email is not to send the email. The point is to connect and to serve. And your email doesn’t have to only exist in copy format to work. We can get a little creative and think outside the box here.
Who connected with the idea that email takes forever? Established business owners really feel this one. You know what it feels like when something is optimized and when it’s flowing well and it’s working the way that it should. It’s real obvious when you go to sit down and work on your email and it feels like it’s draining you. Which, ding, ding, ding, that is our signal, dear.
listener that something is happening here. All of that struggle is a signal that your body, your system has put in place to slow you down because it’s trying to get your attention. So this one is almost always an alignment issue. When something is taking that long to get done, something about it is off. It might be what you are selling or how you are selling. could be
how you are supporting your body leading into the physical act of typing, writing, drafting. It could be what you are doing to help your energy flow and giving it direction and purpose. I don’t know, I can’t know without knowing you specifically and being able to look at your specific human design chart.
But I do know that once we figure out what that is, the ideating, the drafting, the creating and sending part of email gets so much faster and so much easier. So if you’re feeling this one and you want the fast track to identifying, well, what the heck is going on then? Like, okay, so something’s out of alignment, but how?
do I figure out what it is and what’s happening and what it means and even better, how to course correct it. A one-on-one session is really great for being able to identify those things. Now, if you don’t like to sell, I know we have talked about this before, like I dedicated an entire episode to this topic already. You can go back to episode two, you can listen to that and get the refresher or if you haven’t listened yet, definitely go listen to it.
Again, I would ask you like, but what about selling do you not like? You don’t want to feel inauthentic. You don’t want to sell something that people don’t need or won’t genuinely benefit from. You don’t want to force your stuff on them because like saying, yes, like those are all very normal, good things to want to avoid. But remember selling is simply sharing an opportunity with people.
They are fully fledged, grown-ass adults with sovereignty over their own bank accounts. If they don’t want to, they won’t. They just, they ain’t gonna, right? Predeciding for them that they’re going to say no does not do you nor them any favors. Like literally no one wins there, except maybe your competitors who are showing up and staying visible and letting them know how they can help.
I love getting into this in my one-on-one sessions with clients where we really get to talk about, okay, well, what does selling look like for you? What is the most aligned way for you to do that? For you to show up and to connect. Really getting to dig into this and equip you with how you are wired, how you are designed to convert.
The number of times that I hear from clients that they’re now excited and rejuvenated about their offer or their emails or their marketing, like, it is damn near every client that I work with. I know that that is not a coincidence. It’s actually like the whole point of why I do what I do. Now let’s say you’re sending the emails. Do you have overcome all of that other stuff and you are sending the emails but you are not getting the results?
or you’re getting some results, but you really know that you could be getting better results. What about that? This is another good one to really sit with for a second, because the first thing I would ask you is, can we clarify what you mean by results? What are you measuring and what are you expecting? Because sometimes the results are there and your expectations are just off. Now,
Yes, there are times where something is genuinely not matching up. What you’re saying, how you’re saying it, who you’re saying it to, what you’re trying to promote, there is some sort of dissonance and misalignment there that we need to tweak and get back into place. But let’s make sure that your expectations aren’t sabotaging you first and foremost. So think about this. Like literally you can get out a piece paper and write this down. How many people are you sending this email to? The bigger the list,
the more people you are sending it to, the smaller your numbers are probably going to be. The smaller your list is, the higher your open rates, your click-through rates might be. So first of all, keep that in check. Also, what goals are you attaching to this? Like what are you expecting from your results? Now I’ll tell you right now that open rates can be a metric.
that you use and that you watch for your own trend data of like, are my open rates going up or are they going down? But it should not be a really a goal metric because they’re just not accurate enough. So then what can you look at? Well, our click through rate is going to be a little bit better because it’s action and it’s going to also give you a warmer set of people to be working with. Conversion rates.
are also really great for how many people signed up for the wait list, how many people have bought the thing, et cetera, et Like those are obviously like very hard, fast, firm numbers. Now, good click through rates are like one to 3%. Yes, one to 3 % is like you’re doing pretty good there. So if you’re sitting above one to 3%, you’re already winning.
See what I mean by like we need to redefine and we need to check your expectations because you might be thinking like, oh my gosh, I’m getting a 4 % click through rate. That’s awful. No, actually it’s not awful. That’s pretty damn good. Way to go. And conversion rates are less than 10%. And right now we’re seeing more of like three to 5 % of conversion rates of people who
are on your list versus how many people actually buy into the thing. And so let’s just check your expectations for a second. Now, if you are getting the high click-through rates but your conversion rate is low, that tells us your emails are working and it’s actually the landing page or the next step that needs another look at in order to help it convert better. But if you’re not getting a lot of clicks in your emails, that does tell us
that we can take a closer look at your emails and your messaging. So see how sometimes non-results is still really good information to work with because it’ll point us to the next best step. Whether you are not sending emails at all or you are sending emails but you aren’t getting the clicks or maybe you’re getting the clicks but you’re not the buys. Wherever you fall on the spectrum of all of the above,
looking at your human design chart is so beneficial because it helps us to identify what’s off and what’s not working or what could be working better. And again, having your chart means that we’re not flying blind. We don’t have to guess about what it might be. We are going to be intentional and strategic and we are gonna really lock in, you know? So if any one of the above that we’ve talked about today is out of alignment,
That doesn’t mean that you are bad at email. It is just information, and it tells us exactly what we need to look at next. So here’s what I want you to take from this episode. Whatever your version of friction around email is, it’s there for a reason. And that reason is almost always specific and solvable. It means nothing about you as a person.
It gets 0 % input on your value, your worth, your brilliance, your magic that you bring to the world. But it does tell us that you care enough to notice. You care about the work you do and the people who need you. You care enough not to settle. And you want something better for yourself and others. Sweet, because that is something we can work with. We can actually look at it and do something with it.
Truthfully, this work is a lot easier to do in a one-on-one capacity because what’s true for your email strategy is specific to you, your design, your audience, your offers. So when you’re done here, if you wanna know what this looks like for you specifically, I’d love to work through it together. You can grab a 60-minute strategy session with me. The link is in the show notes.
We’ll look at what’s happening and you’ll walk away knowing exactly where to put your energy. The freedom of not dreading your own inbox, the excitement of actually wanting to hit send, that’s what’s on the other side of this work. And that is what Aligned Email Energy feels like in practice. It starts with figuring out exactly where the friction is coming from.
So until next time, go own your mark and grab a snack. You’ve earned it. Chat soon.
That’s it for today. If something landed, give it space to settle and trust in the timing of clarity. If you were thinking of someone specific during this episode, now’s a great time to share it with them. Here’s to more fully owning your mark. Until next time.
