If selling makes you want to build a wall around your business, this episode is for you. No, I’m not going to convince you to love sales, but I’m going to completely reframe what selling is and show you how Human Design makes it feel like you again.
Here’s the thing nobody’s saying loud enough: most sales strategies were built by people who aren’t wired like you, for people who aren’t wired like you. So if you’ve been showing up, sending the emails, creating the content, and it still feels like pushing a boulder uphill, that’s an alignment problem. And the answer isn’t a better funnel or a new content calendar. It’s understanding how you are built to communicate.
In this episode, I break down the 2 elements I look at with every single client, what they mean, and how they show up in your content and your emails. We’re getting specific. Not general Human Design theory, but the practical stuff you can take into your next email.
Here’s what I cover:
- Why struggling to sell isn’t a character flaw and what you’re actually opposed to (hint: it’s not selling)
- The Venn diagram between “email doesn’t work for me” and “I don’t want to be salesy” and what it reveals
- What Human Design energy types actually are, and why understanding yours is the difference between sustainable business growth and burnout
- A breakdown of all 5 energy types: Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, Manifestors, and Reflectors, and what each one means for your content and emails
- What profile lines are, why they matter as much as (maybe more than) energy type, and a walkthrough of all 6 lines
- Why selling in alignment with your Human Design stops feeling like selling and starts feeling like just being you
Because selling isn’t manipulation. It’s giving people the opportunity to decide. Your job is just to make sure they have the chance to say yes or no, and that the way you extend the invitation actually sounds like you. When your content and emails are built around your Human Design, your energy type, your profile line, your motivation, that ask doesn’t feel like pressure. It doesn’t feel pushy. It just feels like you showing up and doing what you do.
“You do amazing work. Your people get good results. How dare you not share that opportunity with others?” – Breanna
If you’ve ever felt like you were doing all the right things in your content and emails and still not converting, this is the episode that reframes the whole thing.

Introduction to Own Your Mark and Human Design in Marketing
Breanna [00:00:02 – 00:00:47]:
[00:00:02] You’re listening to Own Your Mark. [00:00:04] I’m Breanna Owen. [00:00:05] If marketing feels hard and something in you knows that it doesn’t have to be that way, you’re not wrong. [00:00:11] Every episode, we’re naming what you’ve been feeling but couldn’t quite say, and what it looks like when your communication is built for how you are literally wired. [00:00:19] That’s where human design and marketing strategy meet, and that’s what we do here. [00:00:22] It’s no accident you’re hearing this, so stick around. [00:00:25] I can’t wait to meet you in the next episode. [00:00:29] Something you’ll learn about me is that I do not have a filter, and I really love a spicy take, and I know enough about myself and my own Human Design to know that I’m not here to play small, and I do not sacrifice my peace just to keep someone else comfortable.
The Truth About Selling: Why It’s Hard for Many Business Owners
Breanna [00:00:49 – 00:01:29]:
[00:00:49] So in full transparency, this episode I’m really going to give it to you straight. [00:00:54] I’m going to say the dang thing full flames. [00:00:58] And we’re talking about one of my favorite things. [00:01:01] I mean that genuinely, but you might mean that sarcastically. [00:01:06] And that is selling. [00:01:07] Specifically, we’re talking about why so many smart, talented, genuinely incredible business owners have a complicated relationship with selling. [00:01:17] And honestly, if you struggle with selling, It isn’t just costing you, it is costing your people too. [00:01:25] Now, in the last episode, I promised that this show was going to get tangible.
Making Human Design Tangible for Your Business
Breanna [00:01:29 – 00:02:30]:
[00:01:29] I know that that is something I pride myself on, is making human design tangible and specific and something you can implement into your business. [00:01:41] And I mean that. [00:01:41] We’re getting into the specifics today. [00:01:44] The 3 elements that I go over with every single one of my clients, what they mean and how to implement them in your content and in your emails. [00:01:55] But first, I need to call out an elephant in the room. [00:01:59] Because if the very idea of selling has you building cement walls around your business, and if you’re not open to the idea that selling can feel good, then you’re not going to be able to hear and receive what I have to share with you. [00:02:17] And that would be a bummer because like, that’s kind of the whole reason why we’re doing this here today. [00:02:23] Now maybe you have an Olympic gold medal in selling and it’s just like your favorite thing in the world.
Why Selling Should Actually Feel Good
Breanna [00:02:31 – 00:03:31]:
[00:02:31] Grab your popcorn and hang out with us for a few minutes until I get into the really juicy Human Design stuff. [00:02:38] But if not, and if the idea of selling makes you cringe, subconsciously or consciously, I am talking straight to you, like 5 minutes of uninterrupted eye contact straight to you. [00:02:52] Please hear me so clearly when I say that yes, it is possible for you to enjoy talking about your business. [00:03:03] It’s possible for you to enjoy selling. [00:03:08] Not just it’s possible, like that’s how it’s meant to be. [00:03:11] You are meant to be able to sell and share your business in a way that feels good for you, because selling is sharing and it’s a muscle that can be built in a sustainable, healthy, feel-good way. [00:03:27] And you guessed it, it’s an alignment thing. [00:03:29] So let’s Let’s talk about it.
Breaking Down the Misconceptions About Selling
Breanna [00:03:31 – 00:04:07]:
[00:03:31] The Venn diagram of people who tell me email doesn’t work for me and the people who tell me I don’t want to be salesy is damn near a complete circle. [00:03:41] I get it. [00:03:42] I really do. [00:03:42] You hear the word sales and you probably immediately think of that dad from Matilda. [00:03:47] It conjures up this idea of manipulation and pressure and desperation. [00:03:54] You think of people trying to talk you into something that you don’t need. [00:03:58] All so that they can hit an arbitrary number. [00:04:02] I will die a thousand deaths on this hill that you’re not really opposed to selling.
Selling With Integrity: The Real Opportunity
Breanna [00:04:07 – 00:04:29]:
[00:04:07] You’re opposed to faking it. [00:04:09] You’re opposed to forcing it. [00:04:10] You’re opposed to performing. [00:04:12] And more than all, you are opposed to manipulating people for your own gain. [00:04:19] And I want to tell you that that makes sense. [00:04:21] That feeling is valid. [00:04:24] Of course you don’t want to do that. [00:04:26] Nobody with integrity does, but that’s not selling.
What Authentic Selling Really Means
Breanna [00:04:29 – 00:05:12]:
[00:04:29] That’s just bad selling. [00:04:31] Real selling is giving people the opportunity to work with you. [00:04:35] That’s it. [00:04:36] Sharing what you do, who you do it for, why they want it, what they’re going to get out of it, and making that next step clear, easy, and obvious. [00:04:47] Whether that is getting on a call, signing up for something, or clicking buy. [00:04:52] But after you share the information, it is up to your people to take action or not. [00:04:58] Because guess what? [00:05:00] Your people are grown-ass adults with full sovereignty over their own bank accounts. [00:05:05] Unless you’re married to them, why are you trying to be all up in their business about how they want to spend their money? [00:05:11] They get to say yes.
Breanna [00:05:12 – 00:05:43]:
[00:05:12] They get to say no. [00:05:14] It is their choice. [00:05:16] Your job is just making sure they have the opportunity to decide. [00:05:21] And here’s the part that gets me every time. [00:05:24] Like, if we really want to strip it back and take it back now, y’all, you do amazing work. [00:05:30] I already know this about you. [00:05:32] And your people get good results. [00:05:35] I know that there is some sort of life-changing, business-changing transformation that comes on the other side of working with you.
The Importance of Sharing Your Offer
Breanna [00:05:45 – 00:07:04]:
[00:05:45] And if you genuinely believe in what you have to offer and the work that you do is good work, how dare you not share that opportunity with others? [00:05:55] And I mean that like full chest. [00:05:58] I will say it again, turn it up louder. [00:06:01] How dare you keep that from the people who need it, who are looking for it, who want it from you? [00:06:10] With love and in full seriousness, how dare you? [00:06:15] Just like people eat and drink and breathe, businesses sell. [00:06:19] It’s just the nature of it all. [00:06:22] I don’t care what kind of business you’re running, and I’ve worked in or for most of them— a physical product, a digital product, a service-based business, a brick-and-mortar business, direct sales, online only, a nonprofit— every single type of business out there has to generate revenue to keep showing up for the people they’re meant to serve. [00:06:44] And when someone says now’s not the right time, that’s no problem. [00:06:47] That’s totally fine because you’re going to show up and serve the people who now is the right time for them, because that is how you can make sure that you’re still around when it becomes the right time for your next clients. [00:07:02] That’s just sustainable sales.
Breanna [00:07:04 – 00:07:46]:
[00:07:04] That’s just staying in business long-term. [00:07:08] Now I do want to name one thing because it’s real and it matters. [00:07:12] When you are in desperation mode, you are more likely to reach for whatever strategy is closest to you. [00:07:19] Something that worked for someone else, whatever the internet is trying to tell you to do. [00:07:23] And that is exactly when you are going to end up the furthest from who you’re meant to be. [00:07:30] When you are desperate, you are most likely to be misaligned. [00:07:34] Your content will sound off, your emails will feel forced, your people will feel it, even if they can’t name it. [00:07:42] And yeah, desperation does feel icky, and we don’t want to feel icky.
Using Human Design for Aligned, Enjoyable Selling
Breanna [00:07:46 – 00:08:35]:
[00:07:46] We want to enjoy the way that we sell. [00:07:50] Because Human Design will help us do that. [00:07:53] When you’re showing up in alignment with how you are built to communicate, you stop forcing, you stop chasing, and you start being you. [00:08:04] And it’s amazing how people will naturally lean in when you are coming from a place of alignment. [00:08:10] I told you we were going to get specific in this episode, so let’s get to the good stuff. [00:08:15] These are the 3 things that I look at with all of my clients, and they impact everything, your messaging, your content, your emails, and your offers. [00:08:27] Now, if you know your chart already or you have it handy, great. [00:08:31] You will be able to pay attention to the things that are specific to you.
How to Apply Human Design: Energy Type, Profile Line, and More
Breanna [00:08:35 – 00:09:16]:
[00:08:35] And if you don’t have your chart already, that’s totally fine. [00:08:39] There’s a link in the show notes for you to be able to go and look it up for free. [00:08:44] Okay, I told you this episode was going to get specific, so let’s do that. [00:08:49] There are a ton of things that we can look at within your Human Design chart. [00:08:54] The two that people talk about the most often are your energy type and your profile lines. [00:09:00] And these are two things that I look at with every client that I work with at Own Your Mark. [00:09:06] They impact your messaging, your content, your emails, and your offers. [00:09:12] And while these two aren’t the only two things we look at, they are a big piece of it.
What Is Your Human Design Energy Type?
Breanna [00:09:17 – 00:11:08]:
[00:09:17] So that’s where we’re going to start today. [00:09:18] If you already know your chart, if you already know your energy type and your profile line, great. [00:09:24] Or if you’ve already pulled your chart and you want to go look those things up, go for it. [00:09:29] If not, there’s a link in the show notes for you to be able to pull your chart and know what your energy type is and what your profile lines are. [00:09:39] We’re going to talk about all 5 energy types and all 6 profile lines, but you only need to focus on the ones that are specific to you, your chart, and your energy. [00:09:51] Okay? [00:09:52] Here we go. [00:09:53] First up is energy type. [00:09:55] Energy type is the thing when people are like, oh, you know your Human Design? [00:09:59] Like, what are you? [00:10:01] They’re really talking about your energy type.
Sacral Types: Generators and Manifesting Generators
Breanna [00:11:08 – 00:14:42]:
[00:11:08] They have consistent access to their sacral engine, which is a life force, doer, builder, creator energy. [00:11:16] Now, 70% of all people are a sacral type, which makes sense if you think about it, because like, we need a lot of people to be building and doing in order for things to happen in this world. [00:11:29] So if you are new to Human Design and you start asking people what type they are and you hear a lot of other people say, Oh, I’m a generator, or I’m a manifesting generator. [00:11:37] And you start thinking like, oh my gosh, everybody’s a manifesting generator or a generator. [00:11:42] Like, kinda. [00:11:43] Like, 70% of people are. [00:11:45] So you’re going to come across a lot of generators and manifesting generators. [00:11:51] Now, I will often shorten manifesting generator to mani-gen or man-gen, because that’s just easier for me to say.
Generators: Creating Content That Builds and Does
Breanna [00:13:19 – 00:14:02]:
[00:13:19] When they try to follow a calendar or a schedule instead of creating the content that feels good to them in that moment that they are genuinely excited about creating. [00:13:30] Pure Generators are like our generators. [00:13:32] They are our traditional builders and doers. [00:13:36] So if you are a pure generator, write emails about what you are building and doing in real time. [00:13:42] Show us your process. [00:13:43] What is happening? [00:13:45] Who are you working with? [00:13:46] What brings you joy and satisfaction with your clients, with your work? [00:13:51] Because you are responding to things externally. [00:13:54] You can write questions based off of the questions your people are asking you. [00:14:00] So write about what lights you up.
Manifesting Generators (Mani-Gens): Embracing Multi-Passionate Content
Breanna [00:14:02 – 00:14:42]:
[00:14:02] Many gens are the express builders and doers. [00:14:06] You move fast, you skip steps that don’t serve you, and you can do multiple things really well. [00:14:12] You are multifaceted, you are multi-passionate. [00:14:15] Your content is going to work best when it reflects that range without apologizing for it. [00:14:21] You are meant to enjoy a lot of things. [00:14:24] Do not shrink yourself to only fit in one lane when you are meant to enjoy a lot of things in a lot of ways. [00:14:33] Also, mani-gens have full permission to break that one CTA per email rule. [00:14:37] Because you have energy for lots of things, we can handle that from you.
Non-Sacral Types: Projectors, Manifestors, and Reflectors
Breanna [00:14:42 – 00:19:45]:
[00:14:42] You are not too much for us. [00:14:44] The other three energy types are all non-sacral types. [00:14:48] Which means that the one thing they have in common is the fact that they don’t have consistent access to that life force doer energy. [00:14:56] I.e., they don’t do and go as much, or in the same way that their sacral counterparts do. [00:15:04] A trap that non-sacrals can get caught up in, especially if they don’t know this about themselves, is seeing all the generators and mani-gens out there doing and going and building and creating. [00:15:16] And feeling like they need to keep up even though they don’t have that sacral energy for it. [00:15:23] Okay, so a trap that non-sacral types can get caught up in, especially if they don’t know this about themselves, is comparing themselves and seeing all of the generators and mani-gens out there doing and going and building and creating all the dang time and feeling like they need to keep up. [00:15:42] Officially, no, you don’t.
Projectors: Advisors and Guides in Business
Breanna [00:16:12 – 00:17:07]:
[00:16:12] And it’s important to note that projectors need to be invited in, which makes sense if you think about it. [00:16:18] Unsolicited advice never goes well. [00:16:21] So projectors, your job is to stay visible. [00:16:25] Make it easy for us to see you and recognize you so that we can invite you in to guide us and advise us in the thing that we’re trying to do. [00:16:34] This is a great reason for projectors to show up with their email list because people can see you in their inbox and they can recognize the skills that you bring to the table and the insight you have to share and invite you in to work with us. [00:16:48] If you have an email list, projectors, you have an open invitation to email your people. [00:16:53] It is inherent when they opted into you, so you can email whenever you have the energy to create and send emails. [00:17:01] You do not need 40 hours a week to get your stuff done because projectors can do more in less time.
Manifestors: Trailblazers and Visionaries
Breanna [00:17:17 – 00:18:04]:
[00:17:17] Also, we have manifestors, which are about 9% of all people. [00:17:21] As a manifestor, you’re designed to initiate and inform. [00:17:25] Both of those are key. [00:17:27] They go hand in hand. [00:17:29] Our manifestors are the ones who go first and do the new thing. [00:17:34] They are trailblazers.
Reflectors: Mirrors of the Community
Breanna [00:18:23 – 00:19:45]:
[00:18:23] Last up for energy type are reflectors. [00:18:26] Reflectors are rare magical unicorns of the energy types because they are less than 1% of all people. [00:18:33] Reflectors reflect. [00:18:34] They are a mirror. [00:18:36] They are designed to reflect the health of their environment and their people, which means that as a reflector, your content often serves as a mirror. [00:18:48] For your community.
Understanding Profile Lines in Human Design
Breanna [00:19:46 – 00:20:36]:
[00:19:46] Energy type, again, it is a piece and it’s an important piece, but it is not the full piece, and we don’t look at it in a silo. [00:19:56] It works in combination with everything else in your chart too. [00:20:01] Another really big piece, and arguably could be bigger even than energy type, is your profile line. [00:20:09] Your profile line is the natural role that you play in the world. [00:20:13] It is what we expect from you. [00:20:16] Sometimes I describe it like if you were building a house and you had all these contractors come in and the plumber shows up, but he’s got plants and he thinks he’s gonna go out and plant your garden, you’d be like, hold up, you’re the plumber. [00:20:31] The bathroom’s that way. [00:20:33] Your profile line is the role that you are meant to play in the world.
The Six Individual Human Design Profile Lines
Breanna [00:20:37 – 00:27:03]:
[00:20:37] Your profile line is made up of 2 numbers. [00:20:40] There are 6 individual lines and there are 12 possible combinations of profile line. [00:20:46] I’m not gonna go through the 12 profile combos right now, but I will touch on the 6 individual lines. [00:20:52] And also, if you think about your profile line like an apartment building where 1s are at the ground level, they are our foundation, and 6 is at the rooftop. [00:21:03] Okay. [00:21:05] So with that in mind, our line 1s are our foundation. [00:21:08] They are the experts, the authorities. [00:21:11] They investigate.

Bringing It All Together: Energy Type, Profile Line, and Motivation
Breanna [00:29:12 – 00:30:21]:
[00:29:12] Sometimes you’ll use one, sometimes you’ll use the other, sometimes you can use both. [00:29:16] That’s fine. [00:29:17] The point is that when your content matches your profile line, it feels more natural for you to create, and it helps you land with more authority because that’s the role that you’re meant to play. [00:29:30] And believe it or not, energy type and profile line are just two of the things that we look at, especially when it comes to your messaging, your marketing, your content, the types of emails you send. [00:29:40] I’ll tell you right now, there’s a third element of your chart that I actually think matters more than either of those two things, and it’s your motivation. [00:29:50] But I promised myself that I was going to try to keep these episodes shorter, and I don’t have the time to go into motivation the way I want to right now. [00:29:58] So that is for sure going to be in an episode coming up because I have seen time and time again how motivation impacts not just how people sell, but how they feel about selling. [00:30:11] And it impacts how people respond when they share those opportunities to work with them, because that’s all that selling is.
Start Selling in Alignment With Your Human Design
Breanna [00:30:21 – 00:32:26]:
[00:30:21] It’s giving people the opportunity to decide to work with you or not. [00:30:26] And when your content and your CTAs are written in alignment with your energy type, and your motivation in particular, that ask doesn’t feel like manipulation or pressure. [00:30:38] It just feels like you, you’re just being you, and your people receive that really well. [00:30:45] In my work, I call this the path to yes. [00:30:48] In my work, the path to yes is the framework that I use with clients to map out how your specific audience moves from point A, wherever they’re starting from, to point B, where that yes lives. [00:31:00] We want to make it as easy and obvious as possible for people to say yes to working with you if it’s right for them. [00:31:08] The path to yes is a little bit of buyer psychology and a whole lot of your human design. [00:31:13] And I’ll, again, I’m racking up the ideas for future episodes.
Conclusion and Next Steps
Breanna [00:32:11 – 00:32:26]:
[00:32:11] Chat soon. [00:32:13] That’s it for today. [00:32:14] If something landed, give it space to settle. [00:32:16] And trust in the timing of clarity.
