Does your business have its own energetic blueprint?

The IRS considers your business a separate legal entity. I’d argue it can also have a separate one energetically.

If you’ve been working with your design — applying it to your emails, your messaging, how you show up — and things are mostly clicking but not quite all the way there, this episode is for you.

Because there’s a piece of this conversation that doesn’t get talked about enough: your business may have its own blueprint, and it may be trying to get your attention.

Here’s what we get into:

  • Why your business and you are not always the same — and the specific moment in client work where that usually becomes impossible to ignore

  • What it looks like to follow your own design faithfully and still feel like something isn’t quite landing — and why that friction is actually useful information

  • The real story of how I discovered my business operates from a completely different blueprint than I do, and what became clear once I started looking at it on its own terms

  • Two client stories that show what this looks like in practice — including one whose business is wired to go and build and do while she personally is not, and one whose business is motivated to communicate in a completely different way than she is

  • How to figure out when your business was born — and why there’s no single right answer

  • Why motivation is one of the most important things to understand in your marketing, and how it changes the way your people move toward a decision

  • One thing worth getting curious about before you change your strategy, hire someone new, or decide something isn’t working

If you’ve been putting in real effort and something still isn’t translating, your business blueprint might be a significant piece of why. It’s worth getting curious about.

More About Own Your Mark

There’s a version of your business that feels easy and exciting. Where clients come in, refer others, and come back on repeat. Yes, that version really exists.

Own Your Mark will change the way you think and talk about your business.

This show delivers strategic conversations around Human design for business, email marketing strategy, email sequences, email funnels, aligned messaging, content that converts, sales launches, and your business’s entire communication ecosystem.

Because ease is not about lack of effort. Ease is a result of operating your business the way you’re meant to. When effort is compounded, alignment leads to growth, not burnout.

Breanna Owen is an email, marketing, communications strategist, copywriter, Human Design guide, and creator of Email Energetics (how your energy travels through your words and emails), with 15+ years in sales and copy across fashion, mortgage, coaching, photography, and more.

Own Your Mark is the space where Breanna brings practical, soul-aligned strategy for entrepreneurs who are ready to own their voice, their design, and their results.

Expect solo strategy episodes and live HD applications with guests who make it tangible.

If you’re tired of sending emails that go nowhere, copying strategies that feel completely off, or wondering why your marketing works “good enough” but never quite lands the way it should, this show will help you stop guessing and start building with the blueprint that’s been yours all along.

I’ll cover questions like:

  • How do I make my emails sound more like me?
  • How do I use Human Design in my marketing and messaging?
  • Why are my emails not converting even when I’m doing everything right?
  • What email sequences and funnels does my business need?
  • How do I build an email list and keep my audience engaged?
  • What does selling in email look like when it’s aligned?
  • How can I stop marketing like everyone else and start showing up as myself?
  • What does Human Design change about how I sell and communicate?

Blending in doesn’t do you any favors.  Especially when you have the opportunity to build a marketing system that sounds like you, sells for you, and scales with you.

[00:00:02] You’re listening to Own Your Mark. I’m Breanna Owen.

If marketing feels hard and something in you knows that it doesn’t have to be that way, you’re not wrong. Every episode, we’re naming what you’ve been feeling but couldn’t quite say — and what it looks like when your communication is built for how you are literally wired. That’s where Human Design and marketing strategy meet, and that’s what we do here. It’s no accident you’re hearing this, so stick around. I can’t wait to meet you in the next episode.

Something that I have talked about here and there in a couple of other episodes — and I feel like it’s time for us to have a full conversation dedicated to this idea. I think it’s time that we dig into the difference and the possibility of your personal Human Design birth chart and your business birth chart.

Because if the IRS says that your business is its own separate entity, it makes sense that it could have its own energetic entity as well.

Now, I will just say that this is not always the case. There are absolutely times that I work with clients and we are using their personal birth chart. They are their business. Their business is an extension of them. And when we go through their personal chart and we talk about things and we talk about how that could work in their business, it all makes sense for them. It all clicks. They are yes all the way.

Other times, what happens is I’ve started asking people from the get-go: do they feel like they and the business are one and the same, or do they feel a little bit of a different energy between business them and regular life them?

I was having a conversation with someone a couple of weeks ago. I did an interview for her podcast and I asked this question. I said, hey — in your business, are you the same energy, or are you a little bit different energy? And she initially was like, we’re the same. And I was like, okay. So when you step into your office, when you go from home mode to work mode — you don’t feel any different? Of all of the hats that you wear, your business hat, when you’re in CEO mode — that feels the same to you as when you are in mom mode or wife mode?

And that gave her a little bit of a pause. She was like, actually, maybe that is different energy.

She was able to identify when her business might have been born. So we pulled the business chart, and then I started asking her questions using her business chart — hey, so when things happen in your business, does it feel like this or does it feel like that? We compared things between her business chart and her personal chart. And that’s how she was able to see it. She said, oh my gosh, yeah, you’re right. My business does have its own unique separate energy. And it’s just so wild. It’s just so cool.

[00:02:19] Other times it comes up differently. I was talking with a business owner several months ago and she was telling me about some emails she was writing and sending — how even when she was doing what she thought she was supposed to be doing, even what she thought she was supposed to be doing based off of her energy type and some other things we had talked about — things just weren’t feeling right. They just weren’t going well.

And there was something about what she was saying that clued me in. I just remember thinking, I’m gonna have to throw a wrench into things for this girl. So I asked her — hey, can I just throw something out of left field? Is it possible that your business is its own unique separate energy, and you are trying to follow your personal energy, which is not your business energy? And that’s why you’re feeling a little bit of resistance and things are not going as well as you would want them to.

And she was like, oh my gosh, yes. That’s entirely possible.

Same thing happened. She figured out when her business was born, I pulled that chart, I asked her some questions based off of that — and those things felt so much easier and so much cleaner for her.

So there’s usually some sort of resistance coming up. Something is not quite clicking. Something is not quite landing. And I’m able to key in on that and go, ooh — so what if we look at your business chart instead?

That’s exactly what happened to me.

[00:04:40] I really started integrating Human Design into my work, into the emails I was writing, into how I was supporting clients — back in December of 2024 is when I really started being intentional and insistent about it. And so I was doing this for myself too.

In my personal chart, I’m a 5/1 sacral Generator with Desire motivation — the big three, so to speak. And there were a lot of things about that that were working for me. And then summer of 2025, I started feeling like it was about 75% of the way there, but things were not clicking. They were not feeling 100% great.

And I started having this thought kind of whispering in the back of my head: what if your business is different? What if your business is different? What if your business is different?

I let that song play on repeat in my brain for a few months, unfortunately, until I finally got sick of it and was like, please stop. Please, for the love, play another song. It’s like when my kids get on a kick and they just want to listen to one song over and over again and I’m like — any song. Please. Any song but this one.

So I finally got sick of it, looked things up, and was like, all right, fine. I’ll figure this out.

[00:07:03] It was fascinating to me for a couple of different reasons. If you look at my business chart and my personal chart side by side, they look very different. In my personal chart, I have four centers all down the middle that are defined, but I have two triangles up top — my Head and my Ajna are undefined or open, and I have other centers that are undefined or open as well. But my business chart has those two triangles up top defined, and everything under that is undefined. So it kind of looks like an inverse.

The business chart is a 3/5 Mental Projector with Hope Motivation.

And then when I started looking a little closer, I realized there were actually a lot of similarities between my business chart and my personal chart — which explains why following my personal chart got me some amount of success. I felt a certain amount of this is working, this is landing, this feels right. Because there were similarities. But the differences — Motivation being one of them, Desire versus Hope — they are similar, but they’re not quite the same.

My business being a Projector, a Mental Projector at that. Mental Projectors need to talk things out to make a decision. They don’t really have an internal authority. There’s this sense of — when they say it, and they say the right thing, they can feel like, okay, that’s right for me. Whereas personally, I’m a sacral gut decision — yes or no, in the moment, real quick. Hell yes or it’s a no for me, full stop.

So all of a sudden I’m realizing why being this solopreneur, working by myself, often spending days alone — things were starting to feel a little clogged up. Because the business needs to talk things out in the right environment. It needs to talk things out with the right people. It needs to be able to hear itself.

[00:09:20] No wonder I love being in the Voxer threads all the time. No wonder when I start feeling all flustered and like, come on brain, think of things — I have to stop and ask myself: have I talked this out? Have I gone through this with anybody?

And it also makes so much sense why I was so drawn to starting this podcast — because it gives me this channel of being able to talk things out. What do you know. I love this so much.

There were just these really subtle, nuanced differences. My business has a 3 line in it, which personally I don’t have in my profile. And the 3 line is this trial and error experimenter. It really likes to get in and play in the sandbox. It only learns by doing. It only learns by trial and error and figuring it out for itself. You really cannot tell a 3 line not to do something because they’re just going to go out and do it anyway — and then come back and say, hey, turns out you were right. That didn’t go the way I thought it was going to go. But now I know for myself.

All of a sudden, it made so much sense. Because I personally am so resistant to that trial and error method — and that was bleeding into how I showed up in my business. My business really needed to try things out, and I was stifling it. It has taken a lot of practice. I am still not great at it. But I have to just let myself try and err all over the place. And things happen so much more quickly and flow so much more smoothly when I’m really able to lean into that.

I was talking with a friend and a client earlier this week — someone I’ve talked Human Design with for four years. She’s well versed, very familiar with her own design. I’d briefly mentioned the business chart concept with her previously, but we were having a conversation this week and she brought it back up. She said, by the way, I looked up my business chart and I do not understand it. I don’t know what to do with it.

And I was like, okay, well — hi. Would love to. Let’s talk it out. Which, even that alone is making me laugh.

[00:11:43] So I was looking at her personal chart and her business chart and noticing some key differences. Personally, she’s a Projector. Projectors are advisors, they are guides — they don’t have consistent access to that builder, go-and-do energy. And yet if you knew her and had seen what she’s done with her business, how much she is constantly going — I am more than a little amazed by all that she is able to do.

But if you look at her business chart, her business is a Manifesting Generator. It does have that defined sacral energy. It does have that consistent access to go and do and build. And I’m like — that’s why. Because when you are in business mode and you are operating from your business, you do have consistent access to that.

But the other thing that was really fascinating when we looked at her two charts side by side was Motivation. And Motivation is something I talk about often, especially when it comes to CTAs — and when it comes to really connecting with your people’s why. Because they’re never buying your thing. They are buying what your thing gets them.

Even me and what I do — nobody is buying emails for email’s sake. Nobody is buying Human Design aligned messaging just to let it sit on a shelf. You’re buying what the emails get you. You’re buying access to your people and the ability to speak their language. You’re buying the ability to shut your laptop at four o’clock and get your kid off the bus. You’re buying the ability to be fully present with your family at dinner and not carry the mental load of your to-do list around with you 24/7. You’re buying the ability to have connections set up automatically so that your people are taken care of in the moment they need it, no matter what you’ve got going on in your life.

That’s what you’re buying. Email is just our vehicle. Email is just our tool to help you get there.

[00:14:00] When we understand our Motivation — because if you are speaking from your Motivation, that is what people will be drawn to. That’s what people will connect with. You don’t have to speak to all six possible Motivations. You just have to speak from your specific Motivation, or your business’s Motivation if we are looking at your business chart. So that you can connect into what people really need from you to help move them toward a point of decision — to take action and move to the next step, one way or the other.

So Motivation is a big part of the work I do. And we were looking at hers — her personal Motivation is Desire, which we’ve had several conversations about in the past because I’m also Desire motivated personally.

Desire Motivation is this go-getter, ambitious energy. They want the big thing. They are unapologetic about wanting the big thing, and they are going to go after it. Desire Motivation really lights a fire in people — it’s like, let’s go. Don’t you want this? Of course you want this. It gives permission for people to want more and to go after it unapologetically. I actually have a client who, when she rebranded, leaned heavily into this — permission granted, permission slips, let’s go get what you want. And it has been amazing for her.

But back to this other client. The opposite of Desire — because you’re always going to lean out of alignment in a specific way depending on which Motivation you have — for Desire Motivation, we have the tendency to lean into Innocence Motivation. And Innocence is very opposite of Desire.

[00:16:22] Innocence is very laissez-faire. Very present-minded. It doesn’t try to control the outcome. It’s going to say, ooh, this sounds fun — let’s go do that. What’s going to happen on the other side? I don’t know, but we’ll find out together. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. It’s very here-and-now. It’s not a hustler, it’s not a chaser — it just receives things as they come.

So it was fascinating to look at her two charts side by side and see that her personal chart is Desire Motivation and her business chart is Innocence Motivation. And she was like, yeah, what does that even mean? What do I do with this?

And as I was thinking about it, I said — okay, this actually makes a lot of sense. Because I have seen her in her business not chase things. Very intentionally when she built this business, she was like, I’m not going to chase things. I’m never going to ask. I’m going to let things come to me. And I’m thinking — that’s Innocence Motivation aligned.

There were a couple of other things in her chart where it was like, that makes sense there, but it also makes sense when we look at it from this Innocence perspective. And she said, okay, but what does this mean for marketing? What does this mean when I try to apply this?

And I said — well, one of the things I’ve noticed with other clients who are Innocence motivated is that Innocence Motivation does not like to batch create content.

And the gasp. She gasped.

[00:18:38] It is a highlight of mine. I still just want to laugh every time I think about it because it was so audible — I could tell over the phone that all of the things were clicking into place for her. Oh my gosh, this is making so much sense.

And so we were really able to look at how she had been operating in her business based off of her personal chart. That was getting her so far — but there were some things where she was like, I just don’t know. I’m not sure about this. I’ve been thinking this, but it doesn’t quite line up with my personal chart. And then when we looked at those things from the perspective of her business chart, it made so much sense. She said, this is so affirming and so confirming. There have been things I’ve been thinking about doing that just feel right, but I couldn’t make sense of it.

And sometimes you’re not meant to. Not everything is going to make logical sense. But then there are times where it’s like — actually, if we look at this from the perspective of your business chart, this does make so much sense.

So what’s my point here?

I say all of this to say: sometimes your business has its own energy. And sometimes your business is trying to get your attention — putting the brakes on certain things, resisting certain things that maybe even make sense on a personal level. If you are following your personal Human Design chart and trying to do what that says, and something still isn’t working, it could be a sign that we need to be looking at your business chart instead.

And that is something I would love to help you do.

[00:21:02] If you’re wondering how to even know when your business was created or born — I take a very fluid approach to this. Just like your personal chart, we need three pieces of information: when your business was born, the date and time, and the location of where you were when it was born.

The easiest way to do this might be whenever you filed your LLC — you’ll probably have a receipt with a date and time, and you’ll know where you were when you filed. But I have worked with people who said, that is not when my business was born. Or, I filed the LLC on one day, but a few months later when I changed the name and the vision really became clear — that’s when my business was born. Or it might be when the idea first came up at lunch with a friend. I talked to someone else who said his business was born the first time someone paid him for his services. That’s when it happened for him.

So it’s kind of up to you. I know I wish I could give you a more black and white answer, but this is something I love digging into.

And if you feel like you have been working so hard, putting so much effort in, and getting pennies in return for the effort you’re putting into your marketing, your messaging, your emails — this could be a big reason why. It’s worth looking into. It’s worth getting curious about.

I’m going to include a link in the show notes — as I always do, one for looking up your chart for free, and one to book a one-on-one session with me where we can identify when your business was born, pull your business chart together, and really dig in.

[00:23:23] It’s all just so fascinating to me. Because there are two things I know to be true.

One is that email works. It is an $11 billion per year industry for a reason. That reason is that it works. People buy from their email.

The second thing I know is that the best way for you to get the most out of your email marketing is by using a strategy that is custom fit to you and your business. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you can dream it, email can bring it. I believe this 1000%. This is the ground I plant my flag in. A custom built email strategy guided by your unique blueprint — or your business’s unique blueprint — is hands down, bar none, the thing that is going to get you from where you are now to where you want to go.

You have done the hard part of becoming a business owner. You are too good at what you do to settle for the generic, status quo approach. Your marketing, your emails should be a real clear reflection of the amazing ways that you show up in your business and with your clients every single day. I have seen it time and time again. I could never make it up even if I tried. It works every time.

So I’m curious — as you think about everything I’ve shared, what is coming up for you? Is there a possibility that your business has its own unique energy? Do you see places where you were trying to do one thing, and your business was trying to get your attention because it had something to say?

If so, I really encourage you to listen. Consider looking up when your business was born and what your business’s Human Design chart wants to tell you. And if there’s any way I can help, please know that I am here for that. I would love nothing more than to dig into that with you.

Until next time — chat soon.

That’s it for today. If something landed, give it space to settle and trust in the timing of clarity. If you were thinking of someone specific during this episode, now’s a great time to share it with them. Here’s to more fully owning your mark. Until next time.
